Judge Stephen M. Schwebel elected President of the Tribunal
On 25 October 2010, the members of the World Bank Administrative Tribunal elected Judge Stephen M. Schwebel to the Presidency of the Tribunal.
Judge Schwebel, a U.S. citizen, was President (1997-2000), Vice-President (1994-1997) and a member (1981-2000) of the International Court of Justice. He has also been the President of the International Monetary Fund Administrative Tribunal since its inception. He has presided over several important international arbitrations. Prior to his tenure at the International Court of Justice, he served as Deputy Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State, and as Burling Professor of Law at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. He is a former Executive Vice President and Director of the American Society of International Law, and a former member of the United Nations International Law Commission.
Judge Schwebel succeeds Judge Jan Paulsson as President of the Tribunal. Judge Paulsson will continue to serve as a member of the Tribunal.
